We're lucky enough to experience a rare day of Palm Springs rain. I woke up in the middle of the night to the familiar pitter-patter noise, but the weather has been so beautiful I thought I was dreaming it. But no, when I headed out for my morning run, the sidewalks were oddly wet. It was odd because the sky overhead was painfully blue, with a few wispy clouds and though the ground was wet in places, it was wet in spotches. Like there had been a few wayward drops overnight, but they evaporated quickly in the desert dryness.
It was a mile into my run when the offending raincloud made itself known. Though the sky overhead was still blue, random raindrops started to fall -- more like the sky was spitting than like real rain. By the time I got home, the wind picked up and whipped through the palm trees, and everything got all blustery. The raincloud spread, and scared the wispy clouds away. The palm trees were wet and gleaming in the half sunshine a moment ago, but now the dark cloud looks here to stay. Sunshine and rain. It's a true desert storm.
What's on your holiday wish list?
I'd really like to get Disney's Sleeping Beauty for Christmas (the reason why is here). I recently did a casual search on Amazon and Ebay thinking I'd pick up a copy, and was surprised to find that it's far more expensive than expected (shouldn't movies you saw 20 years ago be cheaper now that nobody watches this old animation stuff?!). Disney expert Clamily explained that the movies aren't always available, but are re-released in special editions (or something like that) so they can gauge us when we're feeling nostalgic.
So, unless Santa hooks me up, I'll just have to buy myself an Eyvind Earle painting.
What song gives you the most holiday cheer?

While there is definitely some sucky holiday music out there, good holiday music is the soundtrack to Christmas chaos and all the family fun that goes along with it. There are a couple of albums that to me say 'Tis The Season.
This is SERIOUS egg nog. The recipe is from a special, trusted source called the The Joy of Cooking.
*Egg Nog in Quantity*
Beat separately until light in color:
12 egg yolks
Beat in gradually:
1lb confectioners' sugar
Add very slowly, beating constantly:
2 cups dark rum, brandy, bourbon or rye (I use Captain Morgan's spiced rum and Maker's Mark)
Let mixture stand covered for one hour to dispel the "eggy" taste.
Add, beating constantly:
2-4 cups chosen liquor
2 quarts whipping cream
Refrigerate covered for 3 hours. Beat until stiff but not dry:
8 to 12 egg whites
Fold them lightly into the other ingredients. Serve the egg nog sprinkled with freshly grated nutmeg.
Next year I need to remember to half the recipe, because it's so rich that a holiday party of 30 people has never even put a dent in the amount this makes. Also, I usually add the nutmeg and some cinnamon before letting it sit, so the flavors set better that way. A splash of vanilla never hurt, either.
